Silicone rubber is an elastic and flexible polymer made from certain types of silicones. It is commonly used in the manufacture of silicone rubber seals and insulating materials. Silicone rubber needs to be manufactured to produce rubber-like properties, which facilitate the forming and molding process. Silicone rubber is used for a variety of purposes, and there are distinct advantages and disadvantages when using this material.
chemical resistance
Silicone rubber has considerable resistance and is resistant to acids, alkalis, solvents, chemicals, oils and water.
Economical and practical, widely used
Silicone rubber is stable and versatile. Due to its reliability, it is stable and it can be used for a long time, thereby reducing production costs. Silicone rubber is versatile because it contains miscible compounds. It also poses no hazard from flammable or toxic solvents. Freshly formed silicone rubber can be cured or dried at room temperature without the need for an oven. Rubber of this capacity bonds easily to primed surfaces. The electrical and mechanical properties of silicone rubber remain unchanged under extreme and cryogenic conditions.
cost
While silicone rubber reduces production costs, some rubbers can be expensive to mold and maintain. Liquid silicone rubber, for example, can add cost because of the need for an injection rubber machine and a bake-cure method.
other disadvantages
Some silicone rubber exteriors can be large or thick, which can be a disadvantage if one is trying to create a low-profile look. Silicone rubber also has a high viscosity, resisting the forces that allow liquids to flow. This is a disadvantage if silicone rubber is used in the insulation. This rubber needs to be vacuumed to prevent air bubbles from becoming trapped in the rubber. Silicone rubber can also resist curing (known as cure inhibition) if it comes into contact with substances containing sulfur or clay. All types of silicone rubber, except liquid silicone rubber, are susceptible to these disadvantages.
