Among platinum group metal catalysts, platinum catalysts are used in the largest amount and have the widest range of applications. The active component of the platinum catalyst can be a single platinum, or it can be a binary or multi-component catalyst composed of platinum as the main component, supplemented by other noble metals, transition metals and rare earth elements.

     Platinum catalysts show good activity for hydrogenation, oxidation, dehydrogenation and hydrolysis reactions. It has various forms, including platinum black, colloidal platinum, wire mesh, PtO2, platinum compounds and carrier-loaded platinum.

     Platinum catalysts have been widely used as catalytic electrodes in fuel cells. Although its usage is not large, its potential demand will be great. With the increasingly urgent requirement of human beings for low-pollution and even non-pollution energy, fuel cells may become the largest platinum-consuming field in the future.
     In 2009, China's platinum demand already accounted for a quarter of the world's total platinum demand, and now China is gradually becoming the world's largest consumer of platinum catalysts for vehicles.
